Our Children's Place

Committed to the well-being of children of incarcerated and returning parents.

Our Children’s Place of Coastal Horizons Center is a statewide program that serves as North Carolina’s leading advocate and education resource focused on children of incarcerated and returning parents.  The work of Our Children’s Place centers on:

  • Educating professionals about the impacts of parental incarceration on children and emphasize the urgency to act.
  • Identifying and Promoting policies, programs, and practices which improve outcomes for the children of incarcerated parents.
  • Supporting relationships between these children and their parents, not only to benefit the children, but also to ensure that the corrections system, agencies focused on serving families, and surrounding communities understand how best to facilitate these interactions in order to provide the most value.

Our Children's Place serves all counties of North Carolina.  Our map shows where we've been.  If we've not yet visited you, invite us for a workshop or community presentation!

Handcrafted and Totally Special (H.A.T.S.)

H.A.T.S., which has expanded beyond just hats, is an important part of our community outreach and education work. It is a wonderful combination of generous community members who donate yarn; talented women at the North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women (NCCIW) who make hats and other items; and curious shoppers who make donations in exchange for these handcrafted items.

Donations received are used to support the awareness and outreach activities of Our Children’s Place and help with the transportation needs of the children involved in Mothers and Their Children (MATCH).
